Welcome to the Lewis County Head Start website. Head Start provides comprehensive pre-school experiences for children from economically challenged families and children with special needs. Head Start actively involves parents/guardians, families, and communities in the program implementation.
Head Start is a child-friendly environment that works on developing the entire child. Children learn through lots of hands-on activities and are given an opportunity to make choices.
Head Start’s goal is to provide an environment that stimulates each child’s curiosity and learning. We encourage each child to develop his/her unique pattern of interests, talents, and skills. We know that children learn best through interaction with people and objects, and it is through play that they will achieve their educational goals.
The classrooms are arranged into learning centers. The centers are set up to help children focus their attention on specific subject areas and to develop self-control and self-discipline. Since each child grows and develops at different rates, individual goals will focus on language development, literacy, mathematics, science, creative arts, social and emotional, approaches to learning, physical health and development.
Children learn better when they are interested in what they are doing and are able to explore. Learning centers provide the opportunity to explore learning activities while interacting with others. Children learn at their own individual pace.
Young children learn best when allowed to explore and create. Children learn more when they have some choice in the activity.
Parent involvement and nutrition are key elements at Head Start. Parent involvement involves doing activities and working with children at home. To help parents work with children at home, this website has ideas and links in order for parents to help children at home with math and science and literacy. In addition to these links, information about nutrition is also available on this website.
